Russia’s layered air defence in Syria mapped: Land-based and AEW&C assets

small world map

It is very probable, although unconfirmed, that Russia’s air-defence network in Syria is integrated by “air defence grouping’s automated command and control post” Polyana. This Penza Radiozavod made system is made up of two separate units – combat control and command-staff stations – mounted atop two Kamaz trucks. The latest version know as Polyana-D4M1 (main picture) can process up to 500 airborne targets and track up to 255 targets at a time. Polyana is also able to process data from AEW&C and SIGINT aircraft known to fly missions over Syria, such as: A-50U, Tu-214R, Il-20M, and until very recently Ka-31.

  1. The Russian AD task force in Syria will both prevent new attacks on Russian warplanes and disrupt air strikes by third parties against targets in Syria.

  2. The Antey-2500 surface-to-air missile defence system is also equipped with 9S19ME sector surveillance radar to track and detect high speed targets, such as ballistic missile warheads. The detection range is about 330 km. It detects ballistic missiles at a range of about 175 km.
